Unique One Day Workshops for Professional Mariners
30.05.2010
Over 80 people attended our specialist one day events for the professional maritime sector at Grand Harbour Southampton this April.
The NEXT GENERATION Workshops focus on current issues relevant to the military, government agencies, workboats, pilot boats, patrol boats, search & rescue, wind farm support, superyacht tenders and charter vessels.
Workshop Lead John Haynes opened the day saying that, ‘Expectations, requirements and capabilities are changing for many maritime organizations. High profile roles are evolving in UK, European and international waters. Challenges may be changing and the use of technology increasing, but safety still remains high on the agenda for professional mariners.’
Captain Andrew Moll, Deputy Chief Inspector of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), highlighted specific lessons learned from recent incidents that are relevant to all maritime sectors. William Mills, HM Coastguard Maritime Operations Controller, explained how an MOB rescue evolves using a mix of experience, local knowledge, digital technology and communications.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston discussed actual incidents from around the world yacht races. JoJo Mains, RNLI Community Safety Intelligence Manager, showed how analysis of incident statistics can be used to develop safety interventions and manage risk. Maritime medical consultant, Paul Savage of Saviour Global Solutions explained what actually happens to the human body’s physiology when immersed in cold water.
