Innovative High Speed Craft for Emerging Maritime Roles
Coastal Charters, based in West Cumbria UK, has hosted a research and development project called Wave Access. The project encompassed the design and build of a rapid crew transfer vessel for the offshore wind industry, which could bring significant benefits to operators in terms of cost, time and safety. The vessel design can also be used for fast patrol roles and crew transfers in industries such as oil & gas, offshore construction, medivac, search and rescue.
The presentation highlights that the design work started with a clean sheet, has been entirely target focused and designed from the bottom up. The vessel brings together proven technologies and systems, including gyroscopic stabilization, on to one platform producing a safe and efficient transportation and deployment system for personnel at sea. On completion of the design work it was recognised that in order to prove the concept a prototype vessel was required. The result is the 24 metre slender monohull ‘Tenacity’ - as radical in appearance as in design.
Combining the company’s commercial crew transfer experience, and the engineering capabilities of SB Engineering, this first version of the radical new design provides high speed transportation for up to twelve passengers and three crew. Compared to vessels currently used in the offshore renewable energy sector, it could dramatically reduce fuel consumption whilst travelling at around twice the speed but still maintaining safety and improving comfort. It could reduce the personnel costs to offshore operators through increased efficiency and reduced lost time. From an environmental perspective there is a reduced carbon footprint in both build and operation.
Stephen Beadsmoore - Managing Director, Wave Access Project
Stephen has worked in a range of engineering industries. Starting as a teenager in agricultural engineering. He then moved into construction plant.
His own business was initially building competition engines for customers competing around the world before focusing on plant machinery and then road transport vehicles.
Coastal Charters was formed in 2000 and from 2004 he had some involvement with the developing offshore wind industry. This has culminated in the "Wave Access Project", an innovative, rapid patrol / crew transfer vessel.
